Add a Battery to Existing Solar in Sacramento & Northern California

You already own the panels. This is about keeping what they make and staying on when the street does not.

Who this is for

Panels on the roof, nothing to hold the power.

Retrofits are their own kind of job, and they start with your paperwork rather than your roof.

Solar from another company

We work on arrays other contractors built. What matters is the equipment on the wall and the plan you are billed under, not whose truck installed it.

An array that exports all day

If your production leaves the property at noon and you buy it back at dinner, storage changes which side of that trade you are on.

A street that loses power

Grid-tied solar goes dark with everyone else. Storage is what turns an existing array into something that carries the house.

What we do first

The numbers before the hardware.

A retrofit that ignores your rate plan is a guess with a warranty.

Your rate plan, read carefully

Which plan you are on decides whether stored power is worth real money in your house. We read it before we talk about cabinets.

A look at the existing system

Inverter type, age, capacity, monitoring and whether the array can be paired without replacing what already works.

Honest math

What the battery is likely to shift, what it will not, and where the break-even sits. If the answer is thin we say so at the quote.

Compatibility check

Most existing systems can take storage. Older string inverters sometimes need AC-coupled equipment, and that changes the design, not the outcome.

Panel capacity

Retrofits often surface an undersized main panel. We check it early so it is a known part of the plan and not a surprise invoice.

Permit and utility filing

Adding storage is a new permit and a new interconnection application. We prepare and file both, and handle the corrections.

How it works

Six steps for a retrofit.

The array stays where it is. Everything new happens on the electrical side.

  1. 01

    Send bills and system details

A year of statements plus a photo of the inverter and the main panel tells us most of what we need before anyone drives out.

  2. 02

    Rate and savings review

We model what storage moves on your plan, in your hours, and tell you plainly whether it earns its keep.

  3. 03

    Compatibility and design

AC-coupled or DC-coupled, cabinet placement, transfer equipment and the circuits you want protected.

  4. 04

    Permit and interconnection

Storage plans to the city, a storage application to the utility. Existing solar makes the utility side simpler, not longer.

  5. 05

    Install

One day in most houses. The array keeps producing; the work is on the wall, in the panel and in the transfer gear.

  6. 06

    Commissioning and drill

Firmware, monitoring, then the main gets cut so you watch the transfer happen before we pack up.

Equipment and warranty

What gets added, and what it carries.

StorageEnphase or FranklinWH with a 10-year manufacturer warranty, matched to the array you already own.
CouplingAC-coupled where an older inverter stays in place, so working equipment is not thrown away.
Existing panelsYour current modules and their manufacturer warranties are untouched by the retrofit.
WorkmanshipTen years on the work we perform, including any penetration or conduit we add.
MonitoringStorage reporting on your phone. Where the array allows it, production and backup land in one view.

All electrical and roofing work is performed by appropriately licensed professionals.

Money and rules

Retrofits and the programs that still fund storage.

A retrofit is a storage project, which is where the current money lives. SMUD offers battery rebates of up to $6,000 to qualifying customers, and the Self-Generation Incentive Program continues to fund residential storage statewide, with the largest allocations aimed at medically vulnerable households and high fire-threat districts. The 30% federal credit for purchased home solar ended December 31, 2025; certain third-party-owned lease and PPA structures can still apply a federal credit through 2027.

Because your array already exists, eligibility usually turns on your utility and your household rather than the panels. We confirm which programs your address can claim while we are quoting.

Questions

Retrofit questions, answered straight.

Will a battery work with panels another company installed?

Almost always. We check the inverter and the interconnection first, then design around what is there instead of replacing equipment that still does its job.

Do I have to change my rate plan?

Not necessarily, and sometimes not at all. What matters is knowing which plan you are on, because that is what decides the value of every stored kilowatt-hour.

Does adding storage restart my solar warranty?

No. Your panels keep their own manufacturer coverage, and our ten-year workmanship promise covers the work we add.

Can I keep using my old monitoring app?

Usually yes. Storage brings its own app, and depending on the existing inverter the two either merge or sit side by side.

What if my main panel is too small?

Then it gets solved as part of the project rather than discovered mid-install. That is why we ask for a panel photo up front.
